Humanity
By David Stanley Bell

Humans
the only animals
that live with claws extended
swipe at invisible enemies
bad ass
lyin’ eyes
love is a game gossiped over drinks
manipulate
control
diversified portfolio
drama to fill the hours
adored in rituals
monuments of fear
strike outside
instead of looking within
The world we live in?
only for those that choose it so

we live in love
or we live in fear
we would hide
the magnificence within
rather than risk
the support of approval
networks of security
who are our friends?
who are our enemies?
angels? demons?

sometimes
to seek comfort
is to slide into a comatose shield
to reveal wounds
and face the pain
is to bring release
from the chains that bind
our awareness
to be free
to feel pleasure or pain
and the directions they lead
we can never hide
from ourselves
despite the accomplices
we may keep

Choices
Responsibility
Consequence
Some say
there is no forgiveness
we can only forgive ourselves
own our living
accept our dying
let go of the enemy within
maybe we can retract the claws?
to stop striking the angels dead
