Shadows
By David Stanley Bell

why is the night so long?
what kept you old Sol?
the mental vampires
that drain my resolve
suck away my peace
melt in the gentle light
the sun reaching for the horizon
emerging from it's black hole
the pastels painted on angel hair above
bring my peace back again

normally i would sigh
try to catch what little sleep may remain
but this time
i close my eyes
and return to the shadows
summons the demons forth again
that i may see them eye to eye
that i may stand
legs trembling
heart pounding in my head

come to me oh darkness
that i may run no more
that i may embrace you
for you are me
may i learn your language
that incessantly rumbles just below awareness
when i try to look away from you

speak to me
i am listening
touch me
for i will no longer be afraid
i will no longer fixate along a narrow tunnel
when all I am, all there is
is all around me
awareness is the gateway
perception the bridge
life will be as open as I allow it to be
i want to see
eyes open or closed
