Spring (next season)
By David Stanley Bell

oh
sometimes
the winter seems so long
branches bared to wicked chill
no warmth
no light
the unfamiliar
icy
sting of death
heart shattered
scattered
in the leaves of autumn
dark cocoon
captive space
tears of mourning

but the daybreak star
rises higher in the sky
its heat
becomes
the lifeblood in my veins
the electricity in my flesh
these bursts of green
feel so joyous
yet so strange
got to break in these new wings
to take me higher
than ever before
